Over the course of the last two years, Nevada’s unemployment rate has been steadily rising. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of April of this year 10.6 percent of people in the state are without job. This is particularly significant when the compared the statistics from the same month last year. The Bureau found that, during April of 2008, only 5.8 percent of people were without jobs in Nevada. A year before that the unemployment rate was as little as 4.4 percent.

Although the unemployment rate continued to rise in April, an analysis of the numbers used to create this figure shows that the actual number of individuals lacking Nevada jobs fell by 100, according to the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Currently approximately 146,300 people in the state are without work.

"The decline may be an indication that the worst of the downturn is behind us, but only time will tell if April's reading is the start of a trend or just a brief respite," MercuryNews.com quoted Bill Anderson, who is the chief economist for the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, as saying.

Anderson went on to tell the newspaper that he felt the decline in jobs to be similar to that seen during World War II and that the recession experienced during the early part of the 1980’s is likely mild in comparison. According to him, during 1982’s first quarter, the state lost 2.4 percent of all jobs, while in the first four months of this year 5.7 percent of the state’s jobs were cut.

Unemployment in particular areas of the state differed slightly from the state average, as was to be expected. Reno saw a decline of 0.2 percent from March’s 11.2 percent to 11 percent, while the Carson City area’s 11.3 percent March jobless rate fell to 10.8 percent. Elko and Eureka, both counties where jobs have not suffered quite as badly, say a decline from 6.3 percent to 6 percent.

During the course of the month hiring in the leisure and hospitality industry rose by 1,400 jobs. The professional business services sector increased employment by 600 positions. The construction industry, which has been suffering for sometime, fell by 1,200 jobs. The manufacturing sector, another area of employment that has been feeling the brunt of the recession, also lost 100 positions.

In April the national unemployment rate was 8.9 percent, which means that the state of Nevada has been suffering somewhat worse than the majority of the country.
