Regardless of the current state of the economy, there are plenty of places to look for
Orlando jobs.
From the outside, the Orlando-Kissimmee area's economy doesn't look that great. The
Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation recently reported that during September, the area saw its unemployment rate increase to 11.5 percent. In addition, the
Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that during September, the area had a total non-farm employment of 1,015,700 workers, which is down from 1,017,700 workers during August and a 4.7 percent decrease from last year.
Despite the latest statistics, however, the
Orlando area has a lot to offer when it comes to finding a job. For instance, Orlando itself is home to three
Fortune 500 companies, including Darden Restaurants, AirTran Holdings and Tupperware Brands. The
State of Florida as a whole is home to 32 Fortune 500 companies.
The following industries also have a lot to offer:
Technology - The metro Orlando area's technology industry, which employs 53,000 people, has become a $13.4 billion industry. More than 150 international companies have facilities in the area, which is specifically known for digital media, agritechnology, aviation, aerospace and software.
Tourism - A major portion of Orlando's economy is based around tourism, which brought 48 million visitors to the city during 2004. The area is home to a wide variety of attractions, including Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort, Sea World Orlando and the Orange County Convention center.
Research - The 1,025-acre Central Florida Research Park is the seventh-largest research park in the nation. The park, which is home to more than 120 companies, employs more than 8,500 workers and serves as the hub for America's military simulation and training programs.
Entertainment - Orlando has a developing film, television and electronic gaming industry, which is made up of such companies as Universal Studios, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Full Sail School and the Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy.
Healthcare - Orlando's main nonprofit hospital systems are Orlando Health and Florida Hospital. A new VA hospital and UCF's College of Medicine will soon add to the industry.
Orlando also has a strong restaurant sector and is home to Darden Restaurants, the parent company of Red Lobster and Olive Garden, and the largest operator of restaurants by revenue in the world. In addition, the city is home to a large number of industrial and high-tech companies.
