Tucson jobs were added during August as the city's unemployment rate declined.
During August, the city saw its unemployment rate decrease from 8.6 percent to 8.2 percent, which was lower than the national unemployment rate at the time of 9.7 percent. This is the first time the city's unemployment rate has declined since April, when it went from 7 percent to 6.6 percent.
Tucson had a total non-farm employment of 358,000 workers during August, according to the U.S. Department of Labor
Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is up from 354,100 workers during July, but a 6 percent decrease from last year.
Three industries saw an
increase in employment on a month-to-month basis, including: manufacturing by 100 jobs, education and health services by 100 jobs and government by 4,700 jobs. The information industry employed 4,200 workers, the same as during July.
Only one industry managed to add jobs when compared to last year. The education and health services industry employed 57,900 workers during August, up from 57,800 workers during July and a .5 percent increase from last year.
The mining and logging and construction industries took the biggest hits when compared to last year. The mining and logging industry employed 1,300 workers during August, down from 1,400 workers during July and a 35 percent decrease from last year. The construction industry employed 16,300 workers during August, the same as during July and a 30.9 percent decrease from last year.
Other industries that saw an over-the-year decrease in jobs include:

trade, transportation and utilities by 8.3 percent
information by 14.3 percent
financial activities by 3.5 percent
professional and business services by 9.9 percent
leisure and hospitality by 3.1 percent
other services by 6.4 percent
government by .5 percent
